Gwangmyeong, promoted to the city status in 1981, is located with bordering with Seoul to the north, Bucheon to the northwest, and Anyang to the south and west. Anyangcheon is flanked with Gwangmyeong. It occupies an area of 38.5 square kilometer, which consists of 0.38% of the total area of Gyeonggi Province. Gwangmyeong is the center region of Korea, 6.56km long east to west and 10.3km long north to south. The population of the city is around 314,138 with 115,686 households as of August, 2007.

Influenced by a typical continental climate, Gwangmyeong especially has a huge temperature gap of the summer and the winter due to the climatic extremity, indicating 12.1¡É of its yearly mean temperature. The average in January is -2.5¡É, and the average in August is 25.1¡É. Looking at the average yearly amount of rainfall, it was 1,339mm.
In social and economical aspect, it is a satellite city of Seoul, and in national development axis, it belongs to restricted improvement circle of metropolitan area.
Gwangmyeong is the transportation hub of the metropolitan area with 2 expressway routes, 1 subway lines, 2 railways, Seoul southern ring road, No.1 highway, Suin industrial road and Keyongsoo industrial road. These are providing convenient accesses to Gwangmyeong from every direction. Especially, the opening of Korea Train Express (KTX) that made the whole country to half-day life zone on April 1st, 2004, and Subway line No.7 on Feb., 2000, elevated the stature of Gwangmyeong as the gateway of metropolitan area.
As of Dec., 2005, the number of factories registered in Gwangmyeong was 14,648 and the employees numbered 61,842. In terms of business type, wholesale has dominated the most. In Gwangmyeong, machinery, electronics, fiber, paper, plastic, and food are produced in several factories. Especially, globally recognized enterprises like Kia Motors factories, where the 370,000 cars per year can be produced, are the main contributors of Gwangmyeong economic growth. In 2006 alone, total trade amount in Gwangmyeong recorded US$3,526Mil., with US$3,214Mil., which largely account for automobiles. Its favorable condition of location and convenient traffic network enable the city to accommodated hi-tech industries. |
